“I got royalty inside my DNA”

Knowing that I am a descendant of a woman who was enslaved in this country and a descendant of a man who escaped a lynching in the American south and went on to defend his country in World War II colors how I view the nation to which I have sworn allegiance. It is my duty as an American citizen to question a country that demands so much from me in the face of continued oppression. I hope the dance illuminated the horrors that we as African Americans face on a daily basis and encouraged the audience to begin to resist the police violence, which has become normalized. I ended the dance with the stage bathed in red, drums pounding from the stage while we danced movement from the Haitian Petwo dance.

Petwo is dance of revolution and I wanted to leave the audience with the feeling that revolution is coming. Revolution is in the form of dance, drums, black bodies and the American flag.

#staywoke.
