How can a country that is built on the idea of a constitution that grants life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness to all of its citizens be so ignorant to the struggles of being black in America?

The flag used in the dance was the flag that was given to my grandfather after years of service to his country. Service to a country that required he escape the segregation of Bealsville, Florida in fear of being lynched. Dancing with my grandfather’s flag was the perfect contradiction for me. How I could be covered in the love of my ancestor but also covered in the blood of the millions of Black folk killed in the name of America? I introduced the beloved flag in a ceremonial way while the live singing if Lift Evr’yVoice and Sing could be heard from above the audience. It was important for me to incorporate the Negro National Anthem in juxtaposition to the American flag. The anthem is specific to the struggles of African Americans living in America. It is a plea and pledge at the same time.
